XCOM2: Trooper Mod
Design / Scripting
A custom Soldier class for XCOM2
Troopers are known for their front line effectiveness, possessing a flexible loadout for various combat scenarios.
Summary
The Trooper class is a custom Soldier class to fulfill the 'infantry/frontline' role of unit that was lacking in the original release of XCOM2, featuring custom abilities. It was a project that I worked on in my spare time in collaboration with Danial Azimi Ashkshahr and was released two days after XCOM2's launch.
The skilltree consists of two paths:
One of my gripes with the skill trees in XCOM2 was that there were certain classes where the trees in themselves defined a specific role. I balance my skill choices at every level in a way where players will have two equally enticing options, independent of what tree that specific perk might belong to.

The skilltree consists of two paths:
- The Shock tree is a purely aggressive tree that focuses on dealing damage, with traits and abilities that rely on unit positioning.
- The Support tree is focused on survivability and offensive utility, improving the squad's overall combat performance.

Learning Experiences
It was a challenging endeavour, since there were no tutorials or documentation on how to make custom Soldier classes for XCOM2 by the time it released. I spent the first two days after the game's release reading and working with the source code, trying to craft a class of my own. I was successful, and was the first Soldier class mod with custom abilities to be released. The mod was known as the "Jack" class, aiming to fulfil a jack of all trades role as a versatile but non-specialized class, taking abilities from existing classes and adding a few custom ones of my own in the first release.
As the mod grew in popularity, I decided to overhaul the class instead of making a new one. The Jack class was renamed and became the Trooper class, and its focus shifted to that of an aggressive/supportive character class. I continued to tweak the class based on player feedback throughout the following weeks, replacing existing abilities with ones of my own. Player feedback through Steam Workshop was instrumental to making the class what it is today.
